This 46 minute film is the best animation I’ve ever seen in my life. Hands down gorgeous. While the story itself isn’t anything special, it certainly wasn’t a pain to watch either.
The Garden of Words
Drama | Romance | Slice-of-Life
2013 | 46 minutes | PG
When it rains, a high school student skips school to sit in a park and work on his shoe sketches: He wants to design women’s shoes for a living, and he’s not bad at it. He meets a beautiful woman at the park and as he returns each rainy day, she is always there. Themes of loneliness, romance, and a wish to freeze life right where it is seeps through the characters’ visual and emotional journey.
When we boil it down, the plot is decent but not amazing. The romance between the characters ends up being a little odd when the woman’s identity is revealed, but it didn’t ruin the story for me. Thankfully, the two main characters are developed just enough that they help make the plot stronger.
However, the star of this film is not the plot or the characters, but the animation itself. The motion and design of the characters…
The gorgeous shots of nature, the rain (which was a character itself in the story), of the park’s scenery…
The detail to the mundane motion in life, which then transformed those mundane things into magical slices of life….
The lighting, the amount of detail, the realism, the atmosphere…
I could have sat and watched for five more hours and been just as engaged by the visuals as I was when this 45 minute film started. Seriously!
One of my favorite parts of the film was all the rain. I live in a desert where water is very important and rain is something to be excited about. So to see so much animated rain was like having an “eye-gasm”. It was so beautiful, delicate, sweet looking. I wanted to jump into the film and splash about.
Overall, I found The Garden of Words absolutely spell-binding and I do not hesitant in giving it full five stars. The drama, the wishfullness, the rain, the scent of surreal reality, all completely captured me.
If you’re animation fan to any degree, I highly, highly suggest you sit through this short film. You will not soon forget the animation and it will completely raise the bar of what “good” animation is in your mind. I myself will not forget this film any time soon.
